LOViT Trail Run

Staged along the southern shores of Lake Ouachita, the LOViT 50K exposes runners to the rugged, remote terrain of the Ouachita National Forest. The course traces designated segments of the Lake Ouachita Vista Trail, an IMBA Epic route primarily composed of undulating singletrack. Over 31.1 miles, you will navigate approximately 3,800 feet of elevation gain, distributed across a series of rolling climbs, rocky benches, and ridgelines overlooking the reservoir. While some stretches offer smooth, fast-moving pine-needle paths and brief passages on forest service roads, the majority of the trail demands sharp footwork.

The real challenge stems from the classic Ouachita quartz and loose shale underfoot. Constant rocks, exposed roots, and variable switchbacks break your running rhythm, requiring high trail awareness and ankle stability. Depending on recent precipitation, you may encounter shallow creek crossings and slick, clay-heavy descents. Strategic pacing is essential, as the relentless rolling profile leaves few sustained flats to recover while pushing the legs on every pitch.

Mount Ida is located in west-central Arkansas, with primary road access via US-270. If you are flying in, the nearest commercial hub is Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT) in Little Rock, approximately 85 miles to the east, which requires about an hour and forty-five minutes of driving. Alternatively, Hot Springs Memorial Field Airport provides regional links roughly 35 miles away. Event activities and the staging area center around the Mountain Harbor Resort area on the lakeshore, making on-site cabins or nearby campgrounds the most practical lodging options. Hot Springs offers broader hotel choices roughly 45 minutes east.

Early November in the Ouachitas typically brings brisk mornings in the 40s Fahrenheit and afternoon highs climbing into the 60s, though cold fronts and damp weather are common. Pack versatile layers, including a light windshell and gloves for the opening miles. While Mount Ida sits at modest elevations that require no altitude acclimatization, the remote forest setting means cell service can be spotty around the trailheads, so download offline driving routes and course maps prior to arrival.
