Discipline Guide

Triathlon is the ultimate test of multi-discipline endurance, chaining a swim, a bike leg and a run against the clock and the field. The Kinetic Chronicle catalogs every format on the calendar, from super-sprint triathlons built for first-timers to Olympic-distance races, half-Ironman (70.3) events and full Ironman distance showdowns over 140.6 miles. Typical distances span a 400 m swim / 10 km bike / 5 km run at the sprint end all the way up to a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile ride and 26.2-mile marathon at the long-course end. Notable events in the directory include iconic 70.3 and full-distance races across the United States, age-group qualifiers, off-road XTERRA-style races and beginner-friendly local sprint series. Use the filters below to narrow by state, date or distance and register directly with the organizer.

What are the standard triathlon distances?

Sprint triathlons typically run a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run. Olympic distance doubles those to 1.5 km / 40 km / 10 km. Half-Ironman (70.3) covers 1.2 mi / 56 mi / 13.1 mi, and a full Ironman is 2.4 mi / 112 mi / 26.2 mi.

Do I need a wetsuit for the swim?

Wetsuit rules depend on water temperature and the race's governing body. Most events allow — and often require — wetsuits when water is below 78°F (25.5°C), while pros may be restricted above that threshold. Check each race's athlete guide for the exact rule.

Can beginners enter a triathlon?

Yes. Sprint and super-sprint triathlons are designed for first-timers, with short swims in pools or sheltered water, flat bike courses and a 5 km run. Many events offer relay teams so you can complete one discipline while teammates cover the others.
