Discipline Guide

Multisport racing covers the hybrid formats that sit alongside triathlon — duathlon (run-bike-run), aquabike (swim-bike), aquathlon (swim-run) and other combinations — for athletes who want to race two or three disciplines without the full triathlon. The Kinetic Chronicle lists the full field, including standard duathlons (5K run / 30K bike / 5K run), aquabikes (1.5K swim / 40K bike), aquathlons (2.5K run / 1K swim / 2.5K run) and off-road multisport variants. Typical distances span sprint duathlons (2K/20K/2.5K), Olympic-distance aquabikes and aquathlons, and off-road XTERRA-style duathlons with trail runs and mountain-bike legs. The directory includes USA Triathlon-sanctioned multisport races, off-road duathlon series, aquathlon championships and beginner-friendly formats. Filter by state, date or format to find your next multisport race and register directly with the organizer.

What is a duathlon?

A duathlon is a run-bike-run race with no swim leg. The standard format is a 5K run, a 30K bike and a final 5K run, but sprint duathlons (2K/20K/2.5K) and long-course duathlons are also common. It is a popular entry point for cyclists and runners who do not want to swim.

What is an aquabike?

An aquabike is a swim-bike race with no run leg, usually held as a category within a triathlon so aquabike athletes swim and bike the same course as triathletes and stop at T2. It is ideal for athletes who cannot run due to injury or who prefer the swim and bike disciplines.

Can I race multisport as a relay?

Yes. Most multisport events offer a relay category where two or three athletes split the disciplines (for example, one swims, one bikes, one runs). Relays are a beginner-friendly way to try the sport, and many races award relay prizes separately from individual categories.
