Flatwater sprints to river epics. Filter, sort and register.
Discipline Guide
Paddling racing covers kayak, canoe and surfski events from flatwater sprint regattas to multi-day river expeditions and surfski ocean races. The Kinetic Chronicle lists the full range, including 200 m and 500 m flatwater sprint kayak races, 10-40 mile marathon canoe and kayak events, downriver and whitewater slalom races and long-distance surfski ocean championships. Typical distances span 200 m-1000 m flatwater sprints, 10-40 mile marathon paddles, and multi-day river stage races covering 100+ miles. The directory includes USACK-sanctioned sprint regattas, classic marathon canoe races, surfski ocean series and beginner-friendly recreational paddles. Filter by state, date or distance to find your next paddling race and register directly with the organizer.
What is the difference between sprint and marathon paddling?
Sprint paddling is held on flatwater in straight lanes over 200 m, 500 m and 1000 m, racing head-to-head in stable sprint kayaks or canoes. Marathon paddling covers longer point-to-point or loop courses (often 10-40 miles) on rivers or lakes, with portages around obstacles and a mix of kayak, canoe and surfski classes.
What boat do I need for a paddling race?
It depends on the format. Sprint races require a flatwater sprint kayak or canoe (K1, K2, C1). Marathon and recreational races allow a wider range of boats, including sea kayaks, canoes and surfskis, often with classes by boat type. Many events offer a 'recreational' class for stable, everyday boats.
Do paddling races have portages?
Marathon canoe and kayak races often include portages — short carries around dams, shallow rapids or locks — where you lift your boat out of the water and run to the next put-in. Portages are a tactical part of the race, and shoes you can run in are standard gear.
