The Moab 240 is a colossal non-stop endurance journey tracing a vast loop through southeastern Utah’s red rock country. Over the course of 240 miles, you navigate a relentless 35,000 feet of vertical climbing that traverses stark canyon bottoms, exposed slickrock fins, arid washes, and high alpine ridges. The route skirts iconic landscapes framed by Canyonlands and Arches National Parks, sending you through remote stretches such as Lockhart Basin and the Indian Creek area before driving into the alpine climate of the La Sal Mountains and the Abajo Mountains.

The underfoot terrain shifts constantly between packed dirt, deep sandy washes, loose scree, and technical slickrock steps that punish tired joints. Beyond the physical fatigue, the dramatic biome shifts define the race experience. You begin along low-elevation desert floors near 4,000 feet where daytime canyon heat and heavy sun exposure dominate, only to climb above 10,000 feet into alpine forests where freezing winds, sudden squalls, and snow are real risks. Successfully pacing this distance requires acute navigation skills, calculated rest strategies at designated sleep stations, and the discipline to manage steep, sustained ascents after days on your feet.

Moab serves as the operational base for the race. You can reach the town by flying into Canyonlands Regional Airport (CNY) for limited regional flights, or by flying into Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) in Colorado, which sits about a 90-minute drive east via Interstate 70 and Highway 191. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) provides the broadest selection of domestic and international flights, located roughly four hours north of town. A rental vehicle with good clearance is highly recommended for both your own mobility and for crew logistics navigating rural desert access roads.

Lodging options range from hotels and vacation rentals along Main Street in downtown Moab to established BLM campgrounds along the Colorado River corridor. Early October weather brings significant temperature volatility; town and canyon floors often see comfortable autumn highs in the 60s to low 80s, while nighttime desert and mountain sections can easily plummet below freezing. Arrive in the region several days early to finalize crew plans, attend mandatory check-ins, and allow your body to adapt to the dry climate and higher elevations before setting off on course.
