Course profile

Course breakdown

The Mount Desert Island Marathon features a point-to-point road course across one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes in the eastern United States. Starting in downtown Bar Harbor along Main Street, you will encounter immediate elevation changes as the course wraps around the granite peaks of Acadia National Park. The opening miles take you beneath the shadow of Cadillac Mountain and over the ridge between Dorr and Champlain Mountains, demanding careful pacing through rolling inclines and sharp descents before settling into a rhythm.

As the route winds toward Northeast Harbor and tracks along the western edge of Somes Sound, you will face steady coastal winds and undulating terrain rather than long flat sections. The paved surface provides dependable footing, but the cumulative total of roughly 1,600 to 1,800 feet of climbing will test your quad durability. A demanding stretch over the final 10K features notable grades heading into the fishing village of Southwest Harbor, where the race finishes at Pemetic School. Runners who succeed here manage energy conservatively through the first half to absorb the late-stage climbs along the harborside roads.

Local travel tips

Mount Desert Island is located along coastal Maine, with the closest commercial flight options arriving at Bangor International Airport (BGR), approximately an hour's drive northwest of Bar Harbor. If you are driving from further south, follow Interstate 95 north to Bangor or take coastal Route 1 via Route 3 directly onto the island. Lodging is most abundant in Bar Harbor near the start, but booking months in advance is essential due to peak autumn tourism. Southwest Harbor near the finish line provides quieter cottage and inn rentals, with race-day shuttle buses transporting runners back to Bar Harbor post-race.

Mid-October in Maine brings brisk, variable weather with morning temperatures often in the 40s Fahrenheit and afternoon highs reaching the mid-50s. Coastal winds and occasional rain require layered throwaway gear for the start. In-person bib pickup typically takes place race weekend in Bar Harbor at the MDI YMCA gymnasium. Because the race starts at sea level, altitude acclimation is not an issue, but you should arrive with enough time on race morning to navigate municipal street parking around downtown Bar Harbor before road closures take effect.
