The rundown
Southern Hills Triathlon - Hot Springs is a triathlon event in Hot Springs, SD on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The field welcomes both professional and amateur athletes. Registration is open. Details are sourced from trifind.com, so confirm timing and entry information with the official organizer before race day.
Course profile
The Southern Hills Triathlon takes place along the southeastern rim of the Black Hills at Angostura Recreation Area, centered at the sandy shores of Breakers Beach on the Angostura Reservoir. The swim leg begins directly from a wide, weed-free sand beach into calm, open fresh water, offering easy navigation and clear footing for both the entry and exit transitions. While the reservoir waters are generally smooth, variable late-summer winds across the open basin can occasionally create minor chop that requires focused sighting.
Once out of the water, you will head out on the bike portion, which quickly exits the park perimeter onto local roads cutting through rural ranch country. The bike course features continuous rolling hills across the open plains, testing cadence and gear selection. The open terrain offers virtually no tree canopy, leaving riders fully exposed to whatever headwinds or crosswinds develop off the prairie. Returning to T2, the out-and-back 5K run hugs the lake shoreline on an undulating, punchy trail that delivers scenic water views while punishing tired legs. You will need to pace yourself smartly across the frequent short climbs along the reservoir to maintain momentum through the finish.
Plan your trip
The primary air gateway for the event is Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP), located about 65 miles north of Hot Springs. From Rapid City, the easiest route is a direct drive south along Highway 79, which leads straight toward Angostura Reservoir and the southern Black Hills. If you are road-tripping, major regional access connects via US-18 and US-385. Lodging is available in downtown Hot Springs, which features historic sandstone inns, motels, and natural warm-spring spas, while lakeside camping and cabins are offered on-site within Angostura State Recreation Area for those preferring immediate transition-area access.
Early September in southern South Dakota typically brings warm, dry conditions, with crisp morning temperatures in the 50s Fahrenheit giving way to highs in the 80s by midday. Hot Springs sits around 3,450 feet above sea level, an altitude that is generally manageable for lowlanders but dry enough to warrant extra hydration in the days leading up to the race. Note that entering Angostura Recreation Area requires a valid South Dakota State Park entrance license or daily vehicle permit, so plan to purchase your pass ahead of time or arrive early on race morning with exact cash to avoid delays at the entrance booth.
