Starting on Throckmorton Avenue in downtown Mill Valley, you face an immediate and brutal wake-up call within the first half-mile: the infamous Dipsea Stairs. Spanning three separate flights of roughly 700 steps, this leg-burning staircase pulls you relentlessly uphill before you transition onto narrow singletrack that weaves through the coastal redwoods and firs flanking Mount Tamalpais. What follows is a dynamic elevation profile of around 2,200 feet of climbing matched by punishing descents, demanding total tactical awareness.

After descending into Muir Woods and crossing Redwood Creek, you hit the relentless grind of Dynamite and Cardiac Hill, the highest point of the route. The remaining miles present a relentless technical test as you plunge down through the root-strewn dirt of Steep Ravine, scale the abrupt punch of Insult Hill, and navigate the windswept grasslands of The Moors. Footing ranges from damp wooden steps and slick tree roots to uneven packed dirt, with coastal marine fog often keeping the shaded canopy wet and slick until you break out for the final sprint toward Stinson Beach.

If you are flying in for the event, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK) are both roughly 30 to 45 miles away, with US-101 North providing direct highway access across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. Given Mill Valley's limited hotel inventory, booking accommodations early is essential. Nearby towns along the highway corridor such as Corte Madera, Larkspur, and San Rafael provide ample lodging options within a 10-to-15-minute drive of downtown.

Early June mornings in coastal Marin County are typically cool and misty, with temperatures lingering in the mid-50s before clearing into the 60s or 70s inland as the marine layer burns off. Downtown Mill Valley has strictly enforced parking regulations, and street spots fill rapidly on race morning, so plan to arrive early to park in designated lots or carpool.
